The Los Angeles-area chef who admitted to killing his wife and then cooking her body over a four-day period was convicted of second-degree murder on Thursday.
49-year-old David Viens was heard in a recorded interrogation played during the trial saying that he cooked the body of his 39-year-old wife, Dawn Viens, until almost nothing was left except her skull.
The couple’s best friend, Karen Patterson, told reporters outside the court, “He treated her like a piece of meat and got rid of her.”
Viens, who is scheduled to be sentenced on November 27th, appeared in court in a wheelchair. In March 2011, he jumped off an 80-foot cliff after learning he was a suspect in his wife’s 2009 disappearance. Now he could face 15 years to life in prison.
