The mother of a man shot to death by Anaheim police officers said Wednesday that he was executed on Saturday night, but called for the community to protest his unjust death in a peaceful manner.
Genevieve Huizar, the mother of Manuel Diaz, made the statements accompanied by her attorney, who filed a federal civil rights and wrongful death lawsuit against the Anaheim Police Department on her behalf.
According to a statement issued by the Anaheim police union, the officer fired in self-defense after Diaz, a reported gang member, was seen holding a “concealed object in his front waistband with both hands.”
Anger over the shooting prompted four straight nights of violent protests in the city best known as the home of Disneyland.
