Sandy’s death toll hits 74

As of Wednesday night, the death toll from superstorm Sandy was up to 74 and was expected to go higher as workers continue search-and-rescue and cleanup efforts.

Perhaps the most tragic story is that of 28-year-old NYPD officer Artur Kasprzak. He rescued seven members of his family, including his 15-month-old son, by ushering them to the attic of his Staten Island home after the basement began filling with water on Monday. Then Kasprzak went down to the basement again, but he didn’t return. After the family called 911, rescue teams arrived on boats and jet skis, but they were unable to reach the home due to downed power lines in the water.
