“BINDERS FULL OF WOMEN”: Not Quite as Mitt Described

Mitt Romney’s awkward “binders full of women” remark is still buzzing on the Internet, but it seems the story that he told during Tuesday night’s presidential debate wasn’t quite right.

Jesse Mermell, a former executive director of Massachusetts Government Appointments Project, told reporters Wednesday during a conference call arranged by the Democratic Party, “To be perfectly clear, Mitt Romney did not request those resumes.” Instead, the organization known as MassGAP approached Romney’s team, as part of an ongoing effort that was started before the election.

Ruth Bramson, who was hired as Romney’s chief of human resources after her resume was pulled out of said binder, also set the record straight, saying, “Governor Romney was a tremendous proponent of bringing women into the state. There’s no doubt about it. But the impetus for this was not Governor Romney, but this other organization, MassGAP.”
