Democrats Back Gay Marriage for Party Platform

Democrats working on their party’s platform have decided unanimously to include an endorsement of same-sex marriage, marking the first time the issue has been included in a major-party platform. President Obama’s recent backing of gay marriage paved the way for the decision.

The expected move is already being applauded by many, but some are worried that it could hurt the party’s standing with swing-state voters and African-Americans, who are against gay marriage by a larger percentage than other groups.

Although it was unanimously approved on Sunday by 15-member drafting committee, the platform isn’t final yet, but the same-sex marriage endorsement will likely be included.
