October 11, 2012 - 4:52 pm | Category: Sports

Legendary college football analyst Beano Cook has died. He was 81.

Cook had been a studio commentator for ABC and ESPN for the past 30 years. His encyclopedic knowledge of the game earned him the nickname “The Cardinal of College Football.” His most recent work was on a podcast with fellow analyst Ivan Meisel and a blog that he started in 2010.

ESPN executive chairman George Bodenheimer says, “He was one of a kind. There never was and never will be another Beano. His combination of humor, passion, love of college football and his engaging personality left an indelible mark on the sport and touched anyone who knew him.”

Cook, who never married, spent the last 74 years of his life living in Pittsburgh.
