George Huguely, the former University of Virginia lacrosse player who murdered his ex-girlfriend in a drunken frenzy, was sentenced to 23 years in prison Thursday after he offered his victim’s family a tearful apology.
The jury recommended 26 years punishment for the May 2010 killing of Yeardley Love, but three years were cut from the sentence. The 24-year-old Huguely could be released in less than 20 years if he’s well-behaved behind bars.
Charlottesville Circuit Judge Edwards Hogshire told the court, “Unlike Ms. Love, Mr. Huguely still has the majority of his life ahead of him.”
