The 38-year-old is ending his career with Paris St.-Germain, having just clinched the French league championship. He’s also won championships in England with Manchester United, in Spain with Real Madrid and in the U.S. with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Though his exploits on the field were legendary, he’s been equally known for marrying a Spice Girl, his dashing good looks and his underwear ads. As business expert Simon Chadwick puts it, “Brand Beckham is dead, long live Brand Beckham! Beckham’s transition from athlete commodity to sporting statesman and entrepreneur is now complete.”

According to Forbes, Beckham was the world’s highest-paid soccer player in 2012 at $50.6 million, including his endorsements, which also made him the eighth highest-paid athlete in the world.

In a statement, Becks says, “I owe everything to Victoria and the kids, who have given me the inspiration and support to play at the highest level for such a long period… I’m fortunate to have realized those dreams.”

According to the magazine, Money is projected to earn a lot of money this year — $90 million, including endorsements. LeBron James comes in second at $56.5 million. NFL star Drew Brees, Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods round out the Top 5.

Whether you love or hate him personally, it’s hard to argue that he’s a unique talent – a guy unlike anything we’ve seen in a long time.

If he keeps playing at this level, he could end up being one of the greatest sports champions of his generation.

To add some perspective, here’s a rundown of some of the greatest sports champions in recent years:

Michael Jordan – With six NBA titles and five league MVPs, Jordan is the greatest champion sports has seen since the early ’90s.

Tom Brady – He’s got five Super Bowl appearances (three wins) and has been voted to eight Pro Bowls.

Kobe Bryant – His five championships and fierce focus as a competitor make him one of the all-time greats.

Derek Jeter – Five World Series titles, 13 All-Star appearances, 3,000 hits, and the nickname “Mr. November” for his postseason heroics … You can’t ask more from a ballplayer.

This is the second consecutive MVP award for LeBron and his fourth in the past five years.

Meanwhile, the NBA playoffs continued on Sunday with the first games of the conference semi-finals. The Oklahoma City Thunder squeaked by the Memphis Grizzlies 93-91, while the Indiana Pacers beat the New York Knicks 102-95 at Madison Square Garden.

LeBron and the Heat meet the Chicago Bulls, and the Golden State Warriors take on the San Antonio Spurs Monday night.

Now, a Washington, D.C., city council member is pushing a resolution calling on the Redskins to change their name, citing the grounds of it being “racist and derogatory.” Council member David Grosso suggests changing the name to Redtails, in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Meanwhile, a new poll found that the majority of people are just fine with the name. 79 percent of those polled said they have no problem with the name and the team should keep it. Only 11 percent said they should change it.

Tebow received his first serious offer since being released, from the Legends Football League – formerly the Lingerie Football League. But before you start picturing the devout Christian in a bra and panties, the offer is for him to be a quarterbacks’ coach. There’s no word yet on what his exact duties would be, but you’d have to think he’ll be teaching the ladies all about Tebowing – or more precisely, She-bowing.

Collins’ Washington Wizards teammates Martell Webster and Jan Vesely tweeted support, as did an All-Star lineup of current players – including Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Pau Gasol, Tony Parker and Dwayne Wade. Collins announcement drew official statements from the NBA, MLB and the Boston Red Sox (who asked him to throw out the first pitch at a game). Former president Bill Clinton tweeted support, and Collins also got a call from President Obama Monday afternoon.

The only people that seem to have missed the importance of Collins’ revelation (besides anonymous Internet haters)? Members of the sports media. Various national sports talk radio hosts called it a stunt to sell magazines and that it wasn’t worth time on their shows. And ESPN columnist Chris Broussard appeared on the show Outside the Lines and said that Collins was “walking in open rebellion to God.”

• The largest player in the draft is Ole Miss offensive lineman Terrell Brown, who is 388 pounds and stands 6-foot-10.

• Florida State defensive end Cornellius Carradine is nicknamed “Tank.” Not because he’s big, but because he carried around a toy tank as a young kid.

Because he’s 37, he’s finding it harder and harder to relate to all his 20-something teammates.

Manning says he’s changed the list over the years, but he tries to find stuff with ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s humor to the young guys know where he’s coming from.
