Kindle Fire sold out: Is new one on the way?

Amazon.com announced Thursday that their Kindle Fire is sold out. But have no fear — a new model is apparently on the way, as the company has a press event set for next Thursday in Santa Monica.

In a statement, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said, “Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting road map ahead.”

Kindle Fires are only sold out at Amazon. They remain available at many consumer electronics stores where they’ve been discounted from $179, down from an original price of $200.

Rumors suggest that the new Kindle Fire could have an 8.9-inch or 10-inch screen and could carry a price tag of $300 or less. The current Kindle Fire has a seven-inch screen. Apple is reportedly going to issue a smaller and less expensive iPad this fall.
