Good yeast is always in the last place you think of looking. ZZ Top and Santa Claus may decide to go into the beer-making business after hearing this story.

Rogue Ales, a brewery in Newport, Oregon, looked all over the place to find a new yeast strain and finally found it – in some dude’s beard. The beard belongs to the face of brewmaster John Maier (No not that John Mayer). It turns out that his magical whiskers contain a unique yeast that’s perfect for fermenting beer. The yeast will be used in their new beard beer called “New Crustacean,” which should be available in early 2013.
