In the months before his killing, U.S. ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens said that he was on an al Qaeda “hit list.”
A source tells CNN that Stevens was concerned about “never-ending security threats” at the consulate in Benghazi. He also noted a rise in Muslim extremism and an increase in the influence of al Qaeda in Libya since the fall of the Qaddafi regime.
U.S. intelligence sources have labeled his death as a terrorist attack, but they don’t believe it was planned. They say militants took advantage of the chaos caused by protests over the anti-Islam film at the center of the current unrest in the Middle East.
